How It All Got Started
ECO Journey was founded during the undergraduate years of Alexis and Aja at Michigan State University. Both recognized a glaring disparity within their environmental studies courses—not only were there few people of color in their field, but they were the only two students from their city represented in these spaces. This shared experience forged a unique bond between them, as they discussed how people from urban and inner-city communities, particularly those who looked like them, often felt disconnected from the natural world.
Throughout their academic journey, Alexis and Aja remained steadfast in their commitment to bridging this gap. During their senior year, they resolved to create an initiative that would reconnect people from urban environments with nature while promoting sustainability. ECO Journey was born out of this shared vision—to empower communities, foster appreciation for the natural world, and make environmental education more accessible and inclusive.
With their diverse academic backgrounds and complementary passions, Alexis and Aja bring a holistic approach to their mission. Alexis focuses on systemic sustainability and policy, while Aja emphasizes environmental education and community engagement, creating a dynamic partnership that drives ECO Journey forward.
